What exactly does your manuscript need? There is a common misconception that editing is a "one and done" ordeal. There are multiple types of editing, and you may want all of them or just one. This depends on several factors, including if your manuscript is finished or not. Here is what Keeling Your Darlings offers:
Developmental Editing - This entails "big picture stuff" such as characters, plot and character arcs, theme, and voice - just to name a few. This typically occurs during the creation of your manuscript. Unless otherwise requested, you will receive a detailed letter after our company reads your manuscript that gives suggestions and constructive criticism for the main ideas of your story.
Line Editing - The editor literally goes line by line and paragraph by paragraph to tighten, strengthen, and structure each sentence to make sure it is at its best. This involves the editor making edits as she goes in a Google document.
Copy Editing - This is when spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks come into play. This may involve as little as correcting a typo for a word or how a number is spelled out. As with line editing, this involves the editor making edits as she goes in a Google document.
Proofreading - This is the final stage of editing. The editor will ensure there are no overlooked typos or other errors. She analyzes every word and sentence thoroughly.
Alpha/Beta Reading - This is done as a final run-through of your manuscript. The beta reader gives their opinion about the story and catches any last-minute typos or inconsistencies.
